Instrukce k soutěži
1. Using the tables of thermodynamic data in Appendix D of your textbook, determine
both ΔGo
rxn and ΔGrxn, 1200K for each of the following unbalanced reactions:
a. FeO(s) + CO2(g) Fe2O3(s) + CO(g)
b. CH4(g) + Cl2(g) CH2Cl2(g) + 2HCl(g)
c. CH3CN(l) + H2O(l) CH3OH(l) + HCN(g)
21. Describe the types of energy transfers and transformations involved in the following
processes:
a. A parked car is started and driven off the edge of a cliff into a lake below.
b. A marathon runner’s schedule is to consume a large spaghetti dinner, sleep for 8
hours, then run 42km in approximately 4 hours with occasional cups of Gatorade
and water.
2. Using the table of bond energies on page 131 of your textbook, estimate the reaction
energies of the following chemical reactions (you may look up the structures of the
compounds if you are not familiar with them):
a. 2CH3-CH=CH2 + 2NH3 + 3O2 → 2CH2=CH-C≡N + 6H2O
(propylene + ammonia + oxygen acrylonitrile + water)
b. This reaction has two steps (like a 2-step mechanism, but shown in one line). Give
the reaction energies for step 12, step 23, and step 13. How do these
portions compare?
Cl2 + H2C=CH2 ClH2C-CH2Cl H2C=CHCl + HCl
(chlorine + ethylene 1,2-dichloroethane vinyl chloride + hydrogen chloride)
3. Using Hess’ Law and the thermochemical equations provided, calculate ΔHo
rxn for the
following reaction: HCl(g) + NaNO2(s) HNO2(l) + NaCl(s)
Thermochemical equations:
2NaCl(s) + H2O(l) 2HCl(g) + Na2O(s) ΔHo = +507.31 kJ
NO(g) + NO2(g) + Na2O(s) 2NaNO2(s) ΔHo = -427.14 kJ
NO(g) + NO2(g) N2O(g) + O2(g) ΔHo = -42.68 kJ
2HNO2(l) N2O(g) + O2(g) + H2O(l) ΔHo = +35.35 kJ
