let me tell you about my company. i run a raffle competition, for example. there is limited entries set to 400 numbers. Which i sell each number for roughly around 10$ depends on the prize. after all the numbers are sold the winner is picked through spining a ball and the winner gets the prize. in order for you to entry the competition before you need to answer a question, if you get it right your entered in the competition if your entry is wrong then you cant entry the competition. please have a look at this website for a guide on how the competition works.
