I have researched this extensively and all the online tutorials I have found give very buggy readouts for RPM / MPH calculations. My goal is to use a sensor (image attached) that outputs 0 or 5vdc depending on if the sensor is broken or not. This will be mounted on a wheel, and there will be as many tabs (breaking the beam of the sensor) as possible to get the highest resolution possible of RPM readings. The wheel will be placed on a motorcycle, and need to be accurate and have greater than 10hz update. This code will then be used as inputs in logging equipment, digital speedometer readouts, etc. but that is a separate project.

Hi, Are you using opto isolator sensor? I have experience making this kind of rotation calculator. I will use external interrupt to count every tab detected, because there will be a pulse coming to Arduino, and I will use timer interrupt to calculate how many tables counter captured, and then I will calculate rotation speed based on how many tab counted divided by total tab that your sensor have. Hello. Im designing different electronics devices, mostly based on avr, arm MCUs and boards with them like arduino, stm-discovery etc. (autopromotion^)) Speedometr is easy to implement. As too accuracy - it will be better with lower pulses' amount. Less pulses per -> greater delay -> it can be measured with better accuracy.

The system will be consist of oscilator/pulse generator, counter, cycle sensor, and microcontroller. Oscilator will generate adequate frequency, that will become input of counter. Everytime the sensor triggered, it command microcontroller to read the counter value, then it can be convert to rpm or mph.
