I had taught automatic control system for more than 15 years, currently still teach SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) System for undergraduate as well for master students at bandung Institute of Technology. Besides, I also give engineering services to industries, mostly in integration of data from SCADA, PLC, DCS to historian database, where the data can be analyzed further for improving the performance of the process control system. Regarding the process control itself, first step that should be taken is process parameter identification to be able to set the PID controller parameters. Although, there so many advanced control strategies, PID is still the only control strategy widely used in industries.
For most processes, Proportional plus Integral controller is the most widely used, only slow processes are controlled using PID controller. To handle disturbances, sometimes we need to use feedback-feed forward control and cascade control as well. This process control system can be implemented using Programmable Logic Controller or Distributed Control System (DCS). The data of process control system can be collected to historian database to enable process control performance audit. From this infrastructure, whenever the process control performance decreases up to unacceptable value, then we can tune the controller to get the best performance again.
