One-off graphic design project- World Map

This is for personal use. I am looking to put a up a large world map in my room where I can track my world travels with key chains I have purchased. Where you would come in, is that since my travels will inevitably be focused in the US and Europe where there are more places in less space, I would like the map to be somewhat skewed to allow more space in those areas. Scaling down the oceans is another logical step. I'd like to see some creative ideas that would maintain the look of a world map, while functionally be able to show my travels
