I am working on a documentary which includes the subject of performance art. The performance piece happened in an Australian shop window in the late 1970s. An artist lay face down on a table, with a bare torso, and approximately twenty people in the room carved their initials or name into his back.
It was a gruesome way to make a point about how human behaviour can be manipulated. None of those people would have cut into another human being under different circumstances, but in the Art context, and with the expectation that everyone else would be doing it, everyone in the room was prepared to take part.
Parallels were drawn between this and how individuals like Hitler could change the thinking of an entire nation.
No film or photographs exist of this event. For illustrative purposes, we seek to create two or three grainy black and white "photos" of a generic bare male torso, showing different stages of such an art event. By all accounts, it wasn't a particularly bloody or gory affair. Names were traced on with a scalpel but the artist's back was not slashed with force.
It was in Sydney, Australia in the 1970s. If we see anyone's hands, ethnicity would have been white European. The artist was a slightly built guy in his late 20s, slim build, white.
