Ongoing system development

Hi, Having developed many systems from the ground up I can also provide support when needed. Building from a solid foundation, but with many components from different suppliers, there may inevitably be shortcomings in the whole that affects things a very small percentage of the time. So the code base is Visual Basic for Applications resident within an Excel framework to provide a familiar and flexible user interface. We link to Outlook and other executables using a virtual machine and remote procedure call interface, and we do this on a continuous cycle at frequent intervals, almost running the system as a service, which to be honest Excel was never really designed to do. An issue has arisen whereby Excel fails (every now and again) to deal with the instance where another process may be accessing the same workbook it’s trying to open. This process may be another instance of Excel (updating its links) or Dropbox syncing files – and it’s most likely to be the latter. The solution is to try an error-trapped read-write file open permission before asking Excel to open the workbook that might be being accessed by another process. This should prevent Excel from stalling. I can complete this task this weekend. Please let me know if you have any questions.
