And, for the most part it does have the same features of the hosted version, BUT, there are always delays for new features becoming available on the open source version. The open source version only uses Braintree Marketplace as the payment gateway, so you'll need to have your own account. When you make custom modifications to your own deployment it will take continued maintenance to integrate new features from the open source version. Keep that in mind when considering modifications like custom payment gateways for example. I could help you set this up on a VPS for you to try out and see if it meets your needs.
