Background We process a high volume of orders through our warehouse and all orders are manually picked and packed. We need to implement a way to track who has picked and packed each order and what time. This will allow us to do the following things… Monitor productivity See who has packed / picked each order so we can improve training when mistakes occur. Get a time of when an item was packed so we can check CCTV if customer claims not to have received an item in the package. Improve productivity as there is no need to sign an order. We won't need to ask customers to check who packed their order ( looking for signed initials on invoice etc ) All our order invoices, which also form our pick sheets, can be printed with a barcode for the sequential order number. Project Overview To write some software and propose some barcode scanners that can be used to automatically compile a spreadsheet - ideally in the cloud on google docs / google sheets / google forms etc. Physical Equipment There is a picking area where orders are manually picked and placed onto a conveyor. The idea is that the 2-3 people working in this area will have portable barcode scanners to scan the order as they place on the conveyor. In the packing area there several people packing products. The concept here is to have scanners mounted above the workplace ( 4-5 workstations ) and that you have hold the order with barcode on under the scanner. This will then record who picked the order and the current time. Database The database will compile date on Order number Picking person Picking time Picking error recording Packing person Packing time Packing error recording Process flow Order is picked Order is scanned by the picker on mobile scanner Order is scanned by packer ( some sort of error if there is no data of the order being picked ? ) Order is packed At later date is mis pick / mis-pack is recorded in cells The database can then be analysed monthly for things like … qty of order packed per person / errors per person / total orders processed etc Key points. Mix of scanners / fixed and portable Need to control who is using scanner ( logged in ? / scanned in as user ? / each scanner is linked to one person ? ) Need to identify which scan is a pick and which is a pack ( logged in as function ? scan a barcode “Harry picker” ? each scanner has own address ? ) Some sort of backend to control update peoples names etc ? Output The database must be accessible via internet / possible phone app ? / google docs ?
