Project Description
The project is a virtual tree of light that will incorporate messages of hope, survival and remembrance and recognises the opportunity to add value to the existing Light the Night Project which is held at Centenary Lakes Caboolture in the first week of October by the Caboolture branch of the Leukaemia Foundation. It will provide an innovative way for people to express their support for those who are or have battled leukaemia, lymphoma and other blood related cancers (Leukaemia Foundation, 2012). The Tree of Life acts primarily on a social bottom-line by providing an alternative means of expressing support, hope and memories of those who have either battled or are battling leukaemia, lymphoma and other blood related cancers. The Tree of Light will also have a cultural bottom-line by bringing people together through the messages displayed within the tree. The Tree will display the QUT logo and will promote QUT Caboolture campus, building a partnership between the Caboolture branch of Leukaemia Foundation and QUT Caboolture. Light the Night is in the first week in October which is timely to promote QUT Caboolture within the local community, as it will showcase the work of QUT students to potential students and promote QUT Caboolture as a community focused campus.
At the event the Tree of Light would be projected on a screen on the stage and as the evening progressed the participants at the event would be able to watch the tree grow. People not able to attend the event would be able to watch on their computers and smart leaf for each message sent via twitter or facebook.
There would be twitter hash tag set up for the users to identify their messages are aimed at the Tree of Life, also a facebook page would be set up where people could send and view both twitter and facebook messages. The facebook and twitter messages would be integrated and able to be viewed using both methods.
To access the messages you would set up a web page that uses Javascript and the facebook and twitter APIs. Using a web page would enable people to see the tree grow from their own computers. Javascript has the function to configure the colour of the leaves or messages so they could be colour coded in the same way the lanterns carried at the Light the Night festival are colour coded. Gold for those we remember, blue for the supporters and white for those living with blood cancers.
A Javascript graphics library could be used to display the tree dynamically and has the capability of motion, animation and 3D graphics. To use Javascript to display the graphics of the tree you would be required to use HTML5 which is only available on the newer browsers, however there is no cost to upgrade or install a new browser.
The freelancer website could be used to resource the expertise to develop the Javascript application.
Project Implementation
Successful completion of the proect would require the following resources:
• A screen or screens to display the tree. The Leukaemia Foundation has one screen it would be beneficial to purchase a second screen so you could have one on each end of the stage.
• A computer and projector
• A Javascript application with the capability to grow and display the tree. This could be sourced through the freelancer website (http://freelancer.com.au)
• Marketing advertising the URL and a twitter hash tag to ensure people are aware of the option to become involved in the Tree of Light plus how they can become involved
• Facebook page and a twitter hash tag
The Leukaemia Foundation has a marketing strategy in place to promote the event that is very successful. The recent Caboolture Light the Night event was attended by over 1600 people. This involves advertising on their website, facebook page etc
WE DON'T HAVE A LOT OF MONEY AS WE ARE A NOT FOR PROFIT ORGANISATION. ANY ASSISTANCE FOR THE CHEAPEST RATE WOULD BE APPRECIATED, AND WE NEED IT BY OCTOBER 14th
