For 2 years I was a full-time French teacher and nanny to 4 young kids. They were 6 month-old, 2, 4 and 6 years-old. The 3 younger ones could understand everything I was saying and have easy and short conversation (except the baby of course) and the oldest could have a full conversation in French.
