I am an technical business analyst with 15 years professional experience with Excel and VBA (as well as Access and SQL Server), and I would love the opportunity to chat with you further about your project. The biggest issue is Excel security is quite fallible - while measures can be put in place to protect data, most can be subverted by a savvy user (e.g. the data sheet could be hidden and the workbook structure password protected, but a user can still refer to a hidden sheet with a formula. So say the sensitive information was in cell A1 of sheet 1, we can hide an protect this sheet but a user could still enter the formula =Sheet1!A1 on another sheet and have the data returned). There are ways to protect this further (e.g. hide the formulae in the sheet so users are unable to determine the name of the hidden sheet and therefore can't utilise it in a referencing formula), but these still aren't perfect. This means some consideration should be given to how secure you need this protection to be, and whether the approach should / can be varied or if you can live with this level of protection. I would love to chat with you further about your project to see whether this can be delivered in Excel to your requirements, or to discuss other options!

Hi, I come from a corporate background, and I understand the need to create China walls around critical information. I have encountered many situations in the past where I had to create such segregated information databases. Hence a simple locking of your excel sheet will not be sufficient. Fortunately the newer version of excel allow additional fail-safes to be built in to protect your underlying data. e.g you can not only hide a sheet, but you can also [veryhide] it. A very hidden sheet, needs a macro to execute and unhide those sheets, Making it tougher for unauthorized access. There are a couple of more such tricks which can 1> Stop unauthorized access 2>Help deter unauthorized access 3> track unauthorized access While also ensuring that required data is visible to those who need it. Your project needs someone who can not only understand your requirement, but also preempt your security needs, and I believe I am the right person.
