I did a similar project with my undergraduate students as thesis at university. So I can familiar with the topic. I took a course on MQTT. I am familiar with Amazon AWS cloud services. (This system will not be feasible without a cloud server if you want to connect over internet. But you can configure the system with local network at begin.)
