My staff has already completed the first part of this project for another client. We needed to create an inexpensive and ongoing way to monitor bankruptcy filings for franchises across the US. Although we are monitoring each of the bankruptcy courts for a very specific set of companies, we can report on each bankruptcy filing within hours. The second part -- using Altman-Z or a similar model to identify companies nearing default -- is a little more difficult. There are roughly 700 publicly traded companies with Altman-Z scores currently less than 0 (the lowest is -421.7). You would need to set the appropriate number for your screener. Typically the Altman-Z is based on 10-Ks and 10-Qs so the score would change quarterly; however, the occasional 8-K or similar filings would change the score periodically. Because the Altman-Z portion requires some web scraping (unless you want to subscribe to a premium service) and depending on how frequently you want updates on the bankruptcy, you would either receive a daily email with an excel file or the entire screener would be available on a web-based dashboard. Other than the daily data collection and emailing (or posting to a web-based dashboard), the ongoing maintenance is minimal. I welcome your thoughts or comments.
