I would like a technical whitepaper written about Microservices. There are a number of other whitepapers and resources about microservices that you can use for inspiration and I have the technical knowledge to be able to review your work. I need someone to put it together so that we can edit it. The outline would be something like the following: 1. What are Microservices? 2. Why are Microservices relevant now? - evolution from monolithic applications with one codebase of millions of lines of code to a more modular approach that is easier to maintain. Teams working in smaller groups have proven to be more productive which means. 3. The benefits of a microservices architecture. For example: • easier for groups to work productively • quicker iterations – DevOps and Docker helps these small teams to deploy faster and technologies • Scalable architecture • Maintainable architecture 4. the drawbacks to a microservices architecture. For example: • Each service (sub-system) must encapsulate (have) its own database which means it is hard to do normal queries and two phase commit and strategies need to be in place to deal with this, which is why it is helpful to work with an SOA/ESB/API expert. • The need for better API management • Data consistency • Maintaining high availability 5. How should I go about introducing Microservices / Bringing it all together • API Gateway • Service granularity – how big or small • ESB/SOA Layer • Which applications to start with in your IT estate. For example: First review the quality of your data and processes. Then produce a Strategic Systems IT Roadmap. Then start either service enable existing legacy systems that you wish to keep (by wrapping the systems with API’s) or re-write creaking legacy systems from the ground up using Microservices We plan to write around 50 whitepapers and if this approach works, we would like to continue to work with someone to produce the remainder.
