I am a lecturer in International Relations at a UK university. I use images to convey complex social phenomena and processes. I can usually find what I want or make it in Photoshop (basic amateur level) but I am stumped with this: structural violence. I want a graphic, preferably a photo (rather than the kind of thing I see in infographics) that converts the literal (structural violence) to the figurative (an image representing structural violence). If you contact me I can give you examples of what I mean if what I've written is unclear.
Here's what it means, with a couple of examples:
'unintentional deprivation' - e.g. The World Bank's market reforms (privatization in return for loans) in Africa that mean poor families can't afford to send their kids to school or hospital. This is good intention that unintentionally harms
'There may not be any person who directly harms another person in the structure. The violence is built into the structure and shows up as unequal power creating and unequal life chances'
social institutions and rules that restrain individual potential - preventing disabled people from using sports facilities/public exhibitions/museums
socially-sanctioned inequality (legal racism; state discrimination against homosexuality)
Hi there. I'm an experienced graphic designer. I'm new at this site and trying to build a career. Please be assured that I'll work until you're satisfied with the result. Should you choose to work with me we can talk about details. Best Regards,
