Overlay image on Featured image in Wordpress if in specific category

I have a category on my site called "expired". I want all the posts in that category to have the expired overlay on the thumbnail anywhere the thumbnail appears on the site. I had someone add CSS that does this but it only shows when looking at the category page or on the single post page and not on the entire site, like on the front page or while browsing pages. (The css they did is also adding it to all the thumbnails on the single post page regardless of category.) So I am wanting this corrected so that the image overlay shows on all pages when the post is in the expired category. So if you are the home page and the post is in the expired category it will show the overlay. If you are browsing a category that the post is in and it is also in expired I would like the expired overlay to show. Not just only when looking at the single post. See attached image for example. The theme I am using is [login to view URL]
