I need a formula for producing a bell curve output with several input variables. Please see the attached image for exact requirements. If you can introduce other variables to control the shape of the curve while still meeting the requirements, that would be worth more. Hi, I am a professional Signal Processing Engineer and deal with Probability and Statistics on a daily basis. What you need is actually a generalized Gaussian curve to meet your requirements. I will build a function with the variables you mentioned. However, there are a few technical problems: For example, do you mean the curve to represent a "Probability Distribution Function"? if so, then the area under the curve has to be one and this means that the variables you need cannot be independent and cannot be changed at your will (The degree of freedom is less). If it is not a PDF, then it is OK. And second is you do not care about the width of the bell curve (its standard deviation??) I will give you a matlab code which you can run yourself and test to see the behavior of the curve which matlab plots. Bests, ArmanEngineer

My Background: Manager, Designs. Signal Processing Expert. Implemented many mathematical algorithms in MATLAB. I understand your requirements. Bell curve is basically a Gaussian distribution curve. By varying the sigma value, you can achieve the required curve. I've already worked with Gaussian distribution curve for generating random noise values for testing communication algorithm WiMAX 802.16D. A Bell curve is essentially an inverse parabola converging to an absolute x-offset hyperbole in simplest form, assuming it is bilateral symmetric (as opposed to skewed). You will need some more inputs definitely, for instance the points defied on your example graph controls the start and end of intersecting, but how about the incline/decline slopes. Your example shows a very flat table-top-like maximum at x=600 but the slope might be much more gradual or sharper to the centre. I would suggest adding a slope or acceleration at least, or maybe adding a two-step descriptor such as an attack angle (early ascent from the base) and regress or release factor (i.e. how close to the top point do we "level out", if at all...). Also when you say you need a formula for it, I assume you mean a parameter function f(x,p1,p2,p3,...)=p1x+p2x-...etc. whereby plotting it along an axis is possible? If so, possibly a scale factor might be useful. Have a great day! Ryan

Absolutely trivial. Probably you need variable to define sharpness of transitions, probably two to define sharpness of transition from low to high and from high to low if it's differs.
